About Me

Murasaki Shikibu. Hyakunin isshu hanga shirizu, Katsukawa Shunsho, 1775.

I specialize in premodern Japanese literature, language and culture, with a focus on issues related to sex, gender and sexuality in Japanese court tales. I am currently finalizing a monograph on representations of sexual violence in Heian (795-1185) and Kamakura (1185-1333) monogatari (court tales)and conducting new research on contemporary adaptations of Japanese classics in manga, anime, and film. My other research and teaching interests include monsters in Japanese culture, femmes fatales in Japanese literature, and sex and censorship in Japanese cinema.
